In and around Winnipeg Winnipeg is a large city of 650,000 citizens and one of the oldest centers in Western Canadian history. Once the center of the fur trade, it's river systems had been utilized by native hunters for hundreds of years. Trading Companys later built on the forks of the Assiniboine River and Red River which were being used as major transportation routes into the west. By the late 1800's the Railway finally pushed past Fort Garry and the early settlements surrounding these lines were eventually born.
